Portland / Mercury / Schools Portlandsterdam University, Stoney Girl Gardens, and That One Time I Got Real Pot Plants for a Photo Shoot and Then My Cat Was Stoned for Two Days

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 10:26 AM

If you were reading the Mercury back in 2007, you might remember this shot from a photo shoot I did for the fall fashion issue of that year:

8.23_Fashion_pot.jpg

The models are "smoking" dried kitchen herbs, but the pot plants are real, and were graciously hooked up for me by Stoney Girl Gardens, whose 100% organic medicine has been grown in Oregon since 1999. Everyone told me I wasn't going to be able to get real pot plants for this shot, and I was delighted when Stoney Girl not only helped me prove them wrong, but were super gracious and helpful the whole time, and didn't even get mad when my cat Bruce started tearing into their beautiful plants with such vigor and determination that he would start growling ferociously if you tried to pull him off. They just let him eat it, which kept him mellow and docile for like 36 hours afterward!

Anyway, Jenifer Valley from Stoney Girl just got back in touch with me with some news. They are going to be featured in Big Book of Buds 4, for one thing, and four of their strains are going to be included in the newly revised Marijuana Growers Handbook by Ed Rosenthal, due out in November, so big ups on that!

But the big news is that THEY ARE FOUNDING A POT SCHOOL calld Portlandsterdam University, offering "History, Horticulture, Advanced Botany, Legal, Political Science, Cooking and many other classes designed for the Marijuana Industry of Oregon." But don't get the wrong idea, this is a completely legitimate venture (albeit with a really hilarious name):

We are an education place, not a get rich business learning center.

We believe that Marijuana is an Industry here in Oregon and we need to deal with it before someone else does. This is also the biggest step to legalization that we can think of. The production and sales of Marijuana puts it into commerce. The most important win is that this is State Regulated and along with being a credited course in our only Health University in the state, puts MMJ on the map that will be international news. This will make huge progress for our efforts of full legalization. We wish your opinion and knowledge contribution to this project.

OHSU's even on board!

Portlandsterdam University has been asked to file a Syllabus to offer classes as an extension of the Oregon Health Sciences University. Classes will be offered as a credited course to Doctors, Scientists, Nurses, Pharmacists and other health professionals.

"We believe there is a great need to educate our medical professionals for the emerging Medical Marijuana Industry" said Mike Mullins, director of services. "We are very excited to offer Medical Marijuana as a credited course to our health professionals."

Congratulations to Stoney Girl Gardens, and please do visit the web site for more info.

Jenifer Valley, founder of Stoney Girl Gardens, with
her Oregon Medical Cannabis Award

Medical marijuana activists in Oregon are shedding much needed light on an important topic. Stoney Girl Gardens, founded by Jenifer Valley in 1999, is a private organization of patients and caregivers seeking to further educate the public regarding various aspects of medical cannabis. The work they are doing is paving the way for new patients and doctors to gain access to the bountiful information they’ve gathered and collected for over a decade.

Some of the projects Stoney Girl Gardens is involved with include presenting to the Michigan Medical Marijuana Association and various THC Foundation clinics in Michigan, California, and Colorado; contributing a segment on growing methods and various strains to Ed Rosenthal’s upcoming “How to Grow Handbook” coming to stores this fall; being featured in the “Big Book of Buds 4” also due out this year. If this isn’t enough, they are also international award winning growers having won awards in the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, and have won first place for their unique breeds at the Oregon Medical Cannabis Awards. Another very exciting effort Stoney Girl Gardens is working on is preparing a syllabus for Oregon Health Sciences in an effort to educate new doctors about medical marijuana.

Stoney Girl Gardens is also involved with a current effort, I28, to provide taxation via medical marijuana sales to provide for senior citizen groups, pain management groups, and rehab for Oregon residents in need of such services. Click here for more information about signing this petition.

Founder and activist, Jenifer Valley, was diagnosed with stage IV cancer in 1999. Since she has built upon her philosophy that helping others is what qualifies as true success, she has helped provide education to medical marijuana patients and caregivers. During this time Jenifer has developed region-specific strains and methods that allow just about anyone to grow their own medicine successfully.

Stoney Girl Gardens Invited to 23rd High Times Amsterdam Cannabis Cup 2010

Friday, March 20, 2010 - Acknowledged as a World Class Seed Company, Stoney Girl Gardens has been officially invited to compete and be a major sponsor of this year’s 23rd High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is rolling out the red carpets to introduce the first American Breeders and Seed Company to ever compete. This will be a historical event as not only an American breeder will be featured, but as a fully Medical Marijuana line of genetics will be introduced to the Cup.

This new line of cutting edge genetics is one never seen in Holland or Europe. With extremely fast life cycles of less than 38 days flowering, these new genetics are engineered to specific medical conditions utilizing the M-Scale™. While amazingly fast these genetics exceed the commercial production levels and hold the true cannabinoid profiles designed for particular medical uses and conditions. Not only are these true medical wonders but the flavors are outstanding and in a class of their own. Berkeley Blues really does taste like fresh Blueberry Muffins right out of the oven. Pit Bull is like none other in flavor and medication. This truly is a step forward for the Medical Marijuana Patients in America.

The invitation from Amsterdam includes a Major Sponsor position with all promotion bearing the Stoney Girl Gardens Logos, including the Program Guide full page ads, large booth, VIP tickets and of course the entries. The entries are limited to one Sativa and one Indica with a new hash section.  The invitation comes as a full acknowledgement of Stoney Girl Gardens being a true World Class Seed Breeding Company.

Stoney Girl Gardens will be seeking sponsorship for this event.  Stoney Girl has already teamed up with BudBook.org to begin working on taking the journey from Amsterdam via the Internet!  “Let’s make this a presentation they won’t soon forget” said Stoney Girl.
